First go at student bio

Nicole Hoskings theme for her thesis show is abandonment, specifically focusing on abandoned homes. She took a series of abstract photographs of an abandonment home, located in Danvers Massachusetts. From the inspiration of these photographs she wrote a series of poetry also relating to the subject of abandonment. She wanted to bring imagination and new life to places that are usually forgotten about. By combining the photographs with the poetry it gives the abandoned home meaning again.

Final Panel Layout

This is my final "Left Behind" panels. I did change it to 5 x 4 panel structure.
This is also one of the photo I'm sending to the gallery.

Updated Spreads

I made the changes that we talked about and a few more. I think "disregard" is a better word and it almost has the same meaning as abandoned.

New Panel Structure

I took what we talked about in seminar yesterday and made a new structure for my panels. The first thing I changed is that I made another row so the line spacings the same. I  changed the font to Helvetica Bold. I also made it so every letter and word has the same spacing. I do think this is cleaner and still readable.

First Row

This is my first row out of three. The only thing that I don't like is that with the transparency layer over the images to make the text stand out, kinda takes away the brightness and colors of the photo. I might try to find a way to try to fix that but I don't know what I would do, need help and feedback.

However besides that I really like the way this looks, I think the text is readable.

Structure

This is the structure of my panels. The panels are each going to be 2ft tall and 1ft wide. Im only picking one poem to put across the panels so it won't be confusing.
"The structure of the mind
is just like an abandoned home
 waiting for something new
 to come inside"

I put the book case next to it just to give it a feel of how it would look and how I would use the space. (document 10x 10x)
Going forward I'm going to start photo edited all 18 photos that would go on these panels so I have solid pictures to work with and not just the raw photos I've been using. Then I'm going start putting the text on them. However this "sketch" gives me a leap on the text, showing me where exactly each letter will go.

Panels and Poems

So the more I kept thinking about the panel idea the more I liked it. I think this will actually be better than the accordion fold on the wall because it will make the two accordion books there own thing. I just threw this together on illustrator to get a feel of what it would look like. I found 4 poems that I think would work because each line can be its own thing and it dose not have to be read all together to be understood like before.
However while I'm still struggling with the type a little, this new panel idea gave me more ideas about how the type could be used. Im going to experiment with the type going across two or three panels and see what happens. I think this idea could bring my project a step forward.

These are the poems that are going to be used:

Old Home
Forgot
Neglected
Left Behind
Now stands alone

Each wall
Each window
Each stain
Each nail
Each paint chip

Rusty
Dirty
Soiled
Blacken
Water drips

Cold
Wet
Some sunlight

Working on wall piece

Im still trying to figure out how I'm going to put text on my wall piece, to go along with the 3 books.
With this experiment, I tried to but the image in the type, with an opacity layer over it. I think this way it makes the text stand out with out taking away the whole image or hid the text. This would just be one of the 6 wall pieces. There is just one whole poem without this one wall piece. However wondering if people will read it as one whole thing or just pieces and be confused. I also left some pages black to give a brake.

I like this idea but I'm still obviously struggling with it. Im currently struggling with making them all the same size because I really like the big bold text but also the small text is also nice. I might change the font (because its impact and thats kinda ebb) but it will defiantly still be a bold font.

For the wall piece I want 6 accordion folds stack on top of each other on the wall. I want them to offset with each other so you have more of that 3d effect. I do think I want still want to put the vinyl behind it from the floor to the wall with the abstract type from earlier in the semester.

Poetry Book

This is a poetry book based off the theme abandon houses that I've been working on over brake.

Size: Width: 4.5in
         Height: 6in
        (Pocket Size)
60 Pages, black and white

I really wanted to do more with my poetry aspect of my work and give it a light. These are just a couple spreads including the page spreads, cover, back cover, title page and page of contents. A couple spreads being just images to give you a little pause on the poetry.

I would enjoy feed back friends! :)

Villanelle

Nicole Hosking
Old Abandoned house, Villanelle

The old abandoned house
Just a footprint on the ground
As vulnerable as a mouse

Like a dirt stain on a blouse
Falling softly without a sound
The old abandoned house

Like a forgotten spouse
Lost but never found
As vulnerable as a mouse

As a lonely grouse
A hill beside a mound
The old abandoned house

As a violent joust
An ounce to a pound
As vulnerable as a mouse

With the ceilings soused
A mystery to astound
The old abandoned house
As vulnerable as a mouse

Trying out some different forms of poetry. This ones called a villanelle.

Over break I will be focusing on the accordion books that will go along with my wall piece. I hope to have about three. I think I want two to have images and one to be strictly text.

Unexpected New Colorful Content

Some more pictures,
As an artist I think I'm going to start doing more photography. I really enjoy abstracting the photos into panels. These photos are not from the same location (but I don't think it matters) they are still from a abandon location so I think they still have the same value.

I really like how colorful these photos are and I think there going to add great color to my folding peace.

New Ideas for text

Ive been exploring different ways of combining text and images sense last class. I think this way docent take away from the value of what it actually says. It also interesting to me because the text is almost in the images. I lowered the opacity so the texture from the image can appear through the text.  Also playing with color and weight.

Each poem goes with the photograph next to it or the photograph that its on top of. I haven't edited any of poems yet (something I'm going to do over brake)

Progress

These are two different options on how to incorporate the text into the pice.

More poetry and some ideas for the typography pages in my book.

(Abandoned Houses)

Rusty
Dirty
Soiled
Blacken
Water drips
On my skin
As a bunny runs across my feet.

Going through the rubber on my boot
Just barely touching my skin

In pictures
It seems like every,
Item
Was meant to be there

No trespassing
Police take notice

Third floor
Now on the first
Or maybe second

The paint peeling away at the walls
Revealing
The sad and cold concrete
Revealing
What it once was

Wonder what's inside of you
Wonder what stories you have
Wonder if it's even stories at all
Now just laying there

Perfectly down the center of the colors,
Peeling back,
The art that was once perfect.
Showing its other side
It's not the same color

That house
Destroyed and burnt
But it had to be done,
To let the spirits go free

One stood tall
Proud owner of a family
Today thinks its behavior has no consequences
Thinks nothing of itself
Therefore could make it dangerous
Only thinking about its own effect

The only memory now
Is the smell of smoke and dust
We have burned the past memories in to replace the news ones

Im plugging away at the poetry (and or) aphorisms. Im also starting to make and finalize some accordion books to go along with the wall installation.  Ive been playing with some more "organic" type and some not so organic type. I wanted to get the class thoughts on what vibe works best before I proceed.
