Poetry and Hair
During this short winter break, I’ve taken much needed time to find areas to improve on in my project. The first order of business in terms of improvement is to restructure and organize the work that I’ve already done. I’ve done extensive research and my understand how I want to incorporate the poems, drawings, and personal responses from individuals into an understanding format. During the winter semester, I had to decide if I wanted my drawing to be digital, or use ink to create them. Moving forward, I plan to physically draw out the hairstyles, and implement a story behind it. These are some of the things that I want to do during the semester. I’ve already been able to get a good grasp on the overall theme of the project, I am now in search of creating more concrete materials for a greater presentation. I also want to print some of the different hairstyles on a handbag. I believe this would be very effective in making my work come to life a presentable. The way I see myself using everything at my disposal, and what I liked to achieve is as follows.

First, I will rewrite the poems that I currently have to make them more effective. I plan on going about this by getting assistance from the writing studio.

Secondly, I will begin the illustration phase of the project. This is where I create drawings of different hairstyles to represent the diversity in black hair. I will organize this portion of the project by creating categories for each style. For example, curls have a different texture, so I will create a single category just for curls and texture. I will then continue to do this for other categories such as braids/weaves, and natural/afros. This will be displayed in different parts that people can move to.

Third, I will create a book of poems along with images that represent part of the story. The poem will be on one side of the page, and the image will be on the other. This will also be a great will to present my work and effort.

Fourth, I will print some of the images that I’ve drawn onto a handbag. This will create something tangible from my work.

Lastly, I will have the responses from the individuals, either having their response in the book as well or have it displayed on-screen monitor for viewers to look at.

tweet-length version
It's embarrassing to be denied opportunities simply because the style of your hair. My project explores different hair styles and tells a story behind every picture, For example, the feeling you have after leaving the salon with a new cut; or the styling of your hair for special occasions. High expectations and stereotype has caused many to hate their appearance. Change starts with us, than the world.

My Thesis will focus on black hair culture and self love. It will focus on the roots black people hair and societies’ perception. It will explain other women truth, stories and experiences with their hair. The essential goal is to promote self-love within the black community, and encourage natural hairstyle.

May 2019
My insecurities with my hair started in the 6th grade and through high school. I was humilated on many occasions especially when I changed my hairstyle. People laughed at my hair, and there will be those who would question whether it was real or not. I tried hard to mask my appearance by wearing braids, weave, and many different hair style. The rejection of not being attractive enough because of my hair, gave me the impression that I’ll never be beautiful in anyone’s eyes.
The topic of black girls embracing their Natural hair is something that needs to be addressed, because at some point we all want to be comfortable within our own skin. Many black women are judged and denied opportunities on several occasion because of the texture or style of their hair. We allow them to take charge and it shouldn’t be that way. Every person should take pride owing their blackness and diversity. My overall message of this topic is for women to own their Hair, rock it however you desire, and stop hiding and embrace their true identity. I want every beautiful brown skin girl to be Unapologetic. It doesn't matter if your hair is straightwavycurlycoily or kinky. Because you are enough. My paper will focus on the history of African hair styles. I will photograph and redesign some of the famous African hair look. I will also illustrate a children coloring book of black hair styles.
