Doodle a Day, May 20 something to July 31st

I did one (or more) pen and ink drawings a day from May to July. Some of these had actual purposes for work or other projects but most of them were purely for putting ink on paper.

process book...AGAIN

http://online.anyflip.com/pkzlj/nire/mobile/index.html?1588178068328

The only changes I made are: I added a copyright thing on the title page, added blank pages at the beginning and end of the book, updated page numbers and fixed spreads accordingly. That's literally it.

Spreads again

The first spread hasn't changed cause I actually like the text there. For the second spread I put the circle and triangle icons on separate pages like Arielle suggested, then I added three more pages for my preposition icons and some of my sketches.

Spreads Attempt 1

The only thing I'm not too sure about is that the first spread has the diamonds going all the way to the margins and I don't know if that's ok or not.

Process book rough

It has the content I want to include but not much else.

I also started making these vectors based off my sketches from a few weeks ago but I'm not sure if I should continue with them or not.

Quick Icons (don't ask why I'm up right now)

Guess who didn't use their time wisely!!

These are a few icons I brainstormed over break that I just quickly wanted to show. Right now I have knitting and crafting supplies to make things with but I don't know what I would use them for, and I'm open to suggestions.

Also I fixed my depression brain illustration/icon from before the break.

Illustrations I Guess

I used a drawing program instead of Illustrator to make these so I could make the lines more organic and add more detail and for the life of me I can't get them to line up nicely in this blog post. I also made inked versions of my original pencil sketches, and because these have kind of devolved into illustrations I made two icons at the very bottom; the bigger one is Open and the smaller one is Close.

Some Mental Illness Related Icons

Left to Right: Base, Panic, Bipolar, Depression, Schizophrenia, Anxiety.

I think I'm going to change a few things, but I'm satisfied with the result so far. For bipolar I might just completely redo it since I don't feel like I accurately represented it. For depression I was going for the idea of feeling completely drained all the time but I don't think it's coming across very well, I actually think what I have for anxiety would suit it better. Speaking of, I think I'm going to completely redo anxiety as well, since I don't think a storm is as fitting a representation for it as it was in my head when I was brainstorming (no pun intended). Schizophrenia I'm on the fence about, I had another idea for it originally which you can see in my sketches where a devil stickman is sitting on top of the brain because my uncle apparently had it, and my grandpa described his mental state to me as, "Like the devil was picking at his brain," but I decided not to go through with that one because I think it paints schizophrenia in a bit too negative a light. I'm still trying to figure out how to make my ADD and manic icons; I'm having a hard time making the ADD one look right and it's difficult to make nice scribbly lines in Illustrator for manic.

Trying to Make Sense of My Thoughts

How much or how little information do I need to convey for the viewer to understand what my icon means? One way I've learned to gauge it is by taking an object and making it more and more abstract until you’re left with just the bare essentials of that object. Doing it this way means I also have to assume my audience is able kind of do the reverse of what I did, and make some radical leaps to conclude that these basic shapes I have assembled in this way are able to convey a much different message than they appear. I really like the idea of Christoph Niemann's "Abstract-o-meter" from the TED Talk I found the other day, and with this knowledge I've been able to do a few things such as:

Create the world's least useful road sign.

Relevant TED Talk (and some other stuff)

You are Fluent in this Language (and don't even know it)

I also made these little things where I wanted to take one shape and use it again and again to make different symbols and icons. I tested the idea with a seed shape, then did some sketches for the same idea but with a triangle. I know they don't look like much of anything but the triangle one especially had me sitting and playing with ideas for the better part of yesterday. A few hours after I scanned in the sketchbook page I've thought of a few more symbols to add (other letters of the alphabet, sharp teeth or fangs, claws maybe, and I can't believe I forgot the triforce).

Also I did this and I don't want to talk about it but it's a thing I did and spent time on.
