Series of Animals Associated with Natural Phenomena
I want to create a series of illustrations, either digital or paper, about animals associated with natural phenomena. For example, arctic animals such as polar bears and penguins have often been associated with the element of ice, and with phenomena like the northern lights or the green flash, etc. The reason I wanted to pursue this project is because I have often felt a bond with animals because of their peaceful nature, and I also think that using animals as associations with phenomena could be a way to express the diversity and interconnectivity of nature. I want to create a series of posters that can be seen as standalones or one whole illustration. It will probably have a somewhat abstract style, because I want to portray the vibe of the drawings without becoming hyperrealistic or focused on literal aspects of it.

To create illustrations that are recognizable as phenomena but still within creative license, I have researched pictures, videos and scientific explanations for the phenomenas’ formations. I think some of the challenges I will face are creating individual illustrations that can stand on their own, while contributing to the whole series. Also I think it might be difficult to connect the subjects of each illustration to the other ones in a relevant way. I think my time at Montserrat has helped me develop my abilities to create and think creatively--I have become better at managing my time, I know how to prioritize what’s really important to me, and I know that long term projects require pacing and breaking it down into smaller parts. Especially the illustration class I took last year, Illustration I, I think has helped me to understand how to present a piece visually in a way that resonates and is meaningful.

My capstone choice could relate to some plans for the future because I’d like to work on projects that center on visual storytelling, and this project is a way to pursue visual storytelling in a more abstract sense. The work I plan on making can relate to contemporary art because of its abstract nature and creating new meaning from existing things. I plan to try to become a graphic designer and hopefully focus more on visual illustration projects, and I think this project can help me by expanding my skills and my ability to work on a long term project. I admire a lot of cartoon and anime style artwork like Studio Ghibli’s work, as well as Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante

DiMartino’s work on shows like Avatar the Last Airbender. I follow artists on Deviantart and Tumblr such as gerezon, Tomasz-Mro, and loquaciousliterature (Katie Knudson), because I like their individual styles and seeing other artists’ work sometimes inspires me in my own work.
